John Melquist, teamster
John Melquist came to Cedar Circle Farm in the spring of 2009 with a primary mandate to use the farm’s two draft horses for as much fieldwork as practicable.
This project is not just about caring for horses or driving a team; one has to locate and usually restore various horse-drawn implements, then figure out how best to employ these tools within the overall design framework of the market garden.
John has lived and gardened in Vershire, Vermont, since 1994. During the 70s and 80s he used draft horses for fieldwork and logging. More recently, he owned and managed Trukenbrod Mill and Bakery, a business dedicated to producing bread entirely from locally grown grains.
It is imperative that we as a society foster the continual growth of the agrarian sector of our local economy. We owe this transformation to the upcoming generations. I want to do my small part in this movement, and that is why I work at Cedar Circle Farm.
